Gerrit Remmerde, a complex and solitary artist working in the rural Blue Mountains of Oregon, spent his life largely outside the conventional art world. After earning a degree in fine art from University of Oregon, he built himself a studio in the pine forests of Sumpter Valley and began working on fire lookouts for the U.S. Forest Service. Here he deepened his interest in painting dream sequences and exploring the trickery of perception.
